HMC Design Challenge

Call for Creative Submissions

The ICA Inter­est Group on Human-Machine Commu­ni­ca­tion (HMC) invites schol­ars, design­ers, and creative thinkers from across our glob­al commu­ni­ty to partic­i­pate in a creative design chal­lenge: the creation of a new visu­al iden­ti­ty that repre­sents the spir­it, diver­si­ty, and schol­ar­ly vision of our inter­est group.

We are seek­ing a logo and/or banner picture that works across digi­tal and print formats (e.g., confer­ence mate­ri­als, website, social media, presen­ta­tions). We encour­age partic­i­pants to think creative­ly about symbol­ism, typog­ra­phy, and visu­al metaphors that convey HMC and its spirit.

Submission Guidelines and Timeline

This chal­lenge is open to all current members of the IG HMC who are invit­ed to submit:

  • a prima­ry logo design (jpg, png, or pdf) and/or a banner picture (jpg, png, or pdf)
  • option­al: vari­a­tions (e.g., icon version, mono­chrome version)
  • a brief design ratio­nale (max. 200–300 words) explain­ing the concept and inspiration

We accept a maxi­mum of three (substan­tial­ly) differ­ent submis­sions per person. Joint submis­sions and collab­o­ra­tions among HMC members are allowed.

Submis­sion Dead­line: April 15, 2026

Submit your design(s) via E‑Mail (subject: “HMC Design Chal­lenge”) to lisa.weidmueller@tu-dresden.de

All submis­sions will be reviewed and pres­e­lect­ed by the current HMC lead­er­ship team. The most promis­ing submis­sions will be subject­ed to a member vote, and the winners of the chal­lenge will be unveiled during the HMC busi­ness meet­ing at ICA 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Community Spirit

This design chal­lenge is more than a call for a logo or a banner; it is an oppor­tu­ni­ty to co-create a shared visu­al iden­ti­ty that reflects who we are as a schol­ar­ly commu­ni­ty. We hope the process fosters creativ­i­ty, dialogue, and connec­tion among members while cele­brat­ing the open nature of Human-Machine Communication.


Impor­tant Note: By submit­ting, you affirm the work is orig­i­nal and you own all rights. If your design is select­ed as the winning design, you agree to grant the HMC inter­est group an exclu­sive, perpet­u­al, world­wide, royalty‑free license to use, repro­duce, publish, display, adapt, and modi­fy the design for both digi­tal and print purpos­es in any media now known or later devel­oped, includ­ing as a trade­mark or service mark. You retain copy­right, but agree not to license or use the design, or any confus­ing­ly simi­lar design, for any other orga­ni­za­tion, busi­ness, or project. HMC will provide appro­pri­ate cred­it wher­ev­er reason­ably possi­ble. A writ­ten licens­ing agree­ment will spec­i­fy the scope of permit­ted uses and any agreed-upon attri­bu­tion requirements.
