HMC Design Challenge
Call for Creative Submissions
The ICA Interest Group on Human-Machine Communication (HMC) invites scholars, designers, and creative thinkers from across our global community to participate in a creative design challenge: the creation of a new visual identity that represents the spirit, diversity, and scholarly vision of our interest group.
We are seeking a logo and/or banner picture that works across digital and print formats (e.g., conference materials, website, social media, presentations). We encourage participants to think creatively about symbolism, typography, and visual metaphors that convey HMC and its spirit.
Submission Guidelines and Timeline
This challenge is open to all current members of the IG HMC who are invited to submit:
- a primary logo design (jpg, png, or pdf) and/or a banner picture (jpg, png, or pdf)
- optional: variations (e.g., icon version, monochrome version)
- a brief design rationale (max. 200–300 words) explaining the concept and inspiration
We accept a maximum of three (substantially) different submissions per person. Joint submissions and collaborations among HMC members are allowed.
Submission Deadline: April 15, 2026
Submit your design(s) via E‑Mail (subject: “HMC Design Challenge”) to lisa.weidmueller@tu-dresden.de
All submissions will be reviewed and preselected by the current HMC leadership team. The most promising submissions will be subjected to a member vote, and the winners of the challenge will be unveiled during the HMC business meeting at ICA 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa.
Community Spirit
This design challenge is more than a call for a logo or a banner; it is an opportunity to co-create a shared visual identity that reflects who we are as a scholarly community. We hope the process fosters creativity, dialogue, and connection among members while celebrating the open nature of Human-Machine Communication.
Important Note: By submitting, you affirm the work is original and you own all rights. If your design is selected as the winning design, you agree to grant the HMC interest group an exclusive, perpetual, worldwide, royalty‑free license to use, reproduce, publish, display, adapt, and modify the design for both digital and print purposes in any media now known or later developed, including as a trademark or service mark. You retain copyright, but agree not to license or use the design, or any confusingly similar design, for any other organization, business, or project. HMC will provide appropriate credit wherever reasonably possible. A written licensing agreement will specify the scope of permitted uses and any agreed-upon attribution requirements.
